Custom WooCommerce store: 8 decisions to make before launch

WooCommerce is the most popular store engine in the world and a great choice for small and medium businesses: full control of your data, no fee on sales and a huge number of integrations. But a store is only as good as the decisions made before it is built. Here are the eight I agree on with every client.

1. Sales model and catalogue

How many products? Variants (size, colour, capacity)? B2C, B2B or both? This defines categories, filters and imports — 30 products can be added by hand, 3,000 need CSV import or a wholesaler integration.

2. Payments

In Poland the standard is fast transfers and BLIK (e.g. Przelewy24) plus cards (e.g. Stripe). Setting up one gateway costs PLN 350 net.

3. Shipping and couriers

InPost lockers, DPD, local pickup, free shipping thresholds — each option means different cart rules. A courier integration with label generation (PLN 300 net) saves hours every week.

4. Invoices and accounting

Automatic invoices, numbering, VAT ID in the order, corrections — set it up before the first order.

5. Terms, GDPR and consents

Store terms, privacy policy, right of withdrawal, marketing consents and cookies — designed so that the checkout does not drown in checkboxes.

6. Purchase path (UX)

Most money is lost in the cart. A simple checkout, visible shipping costs, guest checkout and a well-designed product page are planned in the UX/UI stage.

7. SEO and speed

Unique category and product descriptions, Product structured data, friendly URLs, sitemap and fast images.

8. Who will run the store?
